The Azores are nine volcanic islands rising from the middle of the Atlantic, about 1,500 km west of mainland Portugal. Few places on Earth feel this alive. The island's raw energy is right at the surface: crater lakes cradled in green calderas, hot springs bubbling up through the ground, misty ancient forests, waterfalls and black-sand shores.
São Miguel, the largest island, is known as the Green Island. Furnas Valley holds the highest concentration of hot springs in Europe, the north coast is home to Europe's oldest tea gardens, and the surrounding ocean is one of the best places in Europe to see whales and dolphins.
Life here moves at its own gentle rhythm. Mountain, water and stillness come together, and nature becomes your guide.
We'll be staying at a modern 4-star boutique hotel on the island of São Miguel in Ponta Delgada, steps from the marina, restaurants and the city's historic center.
